A Winning Theory

May 14, 2020 by Rob Thomas

“Teamwork and intelligence win championships.” -Michael Jordan

There is nothing more special than a winning team. Time flies, interactions are seamless, and everybody is rowing in the same direction. Part of creating a winning team is being clear about HOW the team will win; the behaviors, the expectations, and the culture.

I don’t believe something is understood, unless it can be communicated in writing. Concisely. And by doing so, no one can ever claim a misunderstanding. After being a part of many teams, here are the attributes I have found to be the most enduring.

Alignment                      Colleagues and friends. Nothing goes unsaid.

Do Things the Right Way        With respect, integrity, and compassion. No job too small or big.

Leadership                      Inspire and motivate. You are either coaching it or allowing it to happen.

Have a Plan. On Paper            Objectives, strategy, tactics, measurements.

Preparation                    Data, not opinions. Be smartest person in the room (but willing to listen).

Be Great                         Be great in everything we do. Every choice, every decision, everything.

Innovate                         Aggressive risk taking. Be willing to put yourself out there.

Relentless                      Never give up.

Bet on People                        Believe in your people, perhaps more than they believe in themselves.

Recruiting                      Find the best. Retain the best.

Enthusiasm and Belief           Energy. Always selling our story. There is one way: All In, All the time.

Focused on Winning               Challenge the status quo. Always. Whatever, whenever.

Tempo                                     Speed Is a force multiplier.

Action                                     Have a bias for action. Decisive action. Adjust later if needed.
